A new data centre to be operated by Amazon has been granted permission by An Bord Pleanála despite opposition by An Taisce. This will be the second Amazon data Centre in the IDA business park on the outskirts of Drogheda.

An Bord Pleanála granted permission for the project after concluding that the centre would not have a significant impact on climate or on the legally binding, national greenhouse gas emission targets. The centre will consume 48MW of power compared to the 60MW for the entire county of Kilkenny according to Eirgrid. Amazon Web Services has stated that their three phases of data centre development in the business park will have a maximum cumulative demand of 144MW.

The government has said it will resist calls to curtail the development of new data centres despite warnings of power outages.
